Two die in Somali currency riots

Angry people rioting in the streets of Mogadishu.
Somali soldiers have killed two people in Mogadishu, after opening fire to halt riots over rising costs and demands for foreign notes.

The riots started Monday when traders refused to accept local currency, demanding US dollars instead of the local shilling notes, AP reported.

One man shot by the troops died on the way to an operating room at the capital's main hospital, Dr. Dahir Dhere said.

And Abdinur Farah, a protester, said his uncle was hit when government troops opened fire and died before he could reach a hospital.

"He was just peacefully expressing his feelings," said Farah, who was marching with his uncle, his uncle's two wives and his uncle's six children. "It is saddening that the very government which is supposed to support him, killed him."

Witnesses say, a shopkeeper shot a boy dead after dozens of angry protesters carrying clubs and stones broke into his store. Hundreds of shops and restaurants on the main roads closed as rioters - including women and children - threw stones at the buildings.

Somalia has been without a central government for more than 17 years and for the past 17 months, the Ethiopian-back interim government has been struggling to exert its control over the country.

Over the last three months, the value of Somali shilling has fallen dramatically from 17,000 shillings for $1 to 30,000 shillings for $1.
